Not a Fan of “Resolutions”

“3….2…..1…..HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

Usually prefaced with or directly followed with questions and statements about New Year resolutions. I am a big fan of personal development and self-reflection, so you’d expect me to love acclaiming resolutions for myself. However, when I hear the term resolution, the first thought that pops into my mind is something that “needs to be fixed.” Now, technically speaking, I know the term resolution means to solve a problem or change an unhappy aspect of an individual’s life. Therefore, by stating resolutions, are you more focused on solving the problem or unsatisfied aspect of your life or on the actions needed to improve that aspect? While it is difficult to find exact statistics, a few Google searches provided data that indicates over 90% of individuals almost immediately fail their stated resolutions very quickly into the new year. To be truthful, I think it has all to do with the term itself, “Resolution.” The majority of resolutions set by most include phrases such as the following:

“I want to…..LESS”

“I want to STOP…..”

“I want to REMOVE…..”

These are all wonderful statements of self-reflection and awareness of areas needing development! Identifying these specific areas of our lives that might be holding us back. However, 9 times out of 10, it stops there! Awesome…
